Volunteer Requirements
All youth sports require a parent volunteer in order to be successful. Summer swim league is no different. With the exception of the coaches, the Shockwaves swim team is entirely volunteer run. We can't hire people to do what our volunteers do, and without you we can't run the meets!
Each family is required to volunteer a minimum of points (1 point = approximately 1 hour of volunteer time):
- 20 points are required for families with 14 yr-old and under swimmers
- 10 points are required for families with only 15 to 18 yr-old swimmers
You earn points by doing jobs necessary for the meets to run, and for the team to exist. Some jobs are more labor intensive or require more time so they are worth more points.
We know you are here to see your swimmer! We will do everything we can to make sure that happens while you earn your points.
Volunteer Fee Policy
A volunteer fee pre-approval of $350 will be obtained at registration checkout to encourage all families to complete the volunteer requirements. Instead of collecting a volunteer deposit check as in the past, this conditional fee per family will be applied during registration but only charged to the pre-approved credit card after the season is over if your family didn't complete the volunteer requirements. When you meet your volunteer requirements by the end of the last divisional meet, we'll cancel the existing pre-approval. Please don't think of this as a "buy out" option; we really don't want your money, we need your time! However, if you don't complete your volunteer requirement by the end of the season, we'll inform you, and we'll charge the pre-approved volunteer fee to your credit card.
There are different types of jobs available. Some jobs require standing, some heavy lifting, and some you get to sit in the AC! Check out the Explanation of Jobs page to learn about the various jobs.
We need volunteers for home and away meets, though our needs do change. The "volunteer board" will open online the Sunday before the next Saturday's meet, and will close the Thursday before the meet. The jobs will be on a first come first serve basis, so don't wait until the last minute. Please make sure you get signed up before Thursday, but if you do find yourself all the sudden able to volunteer at the meet, and the volunteer board is closed, email the Volunteer Coordinator to inquire about jobs that may still be open for the meet.
Volunteer Job Signup for Time Trials and Duals meet opens on Sundays at 9:00 PM throughout the season.
Now, how do you get to the Volunteer board? Check out the How do I sign up page.
Volunteer FAQ's
Q: What if I have 19 points at the end of the season- is that close enough?
A: You need 20 points by the end of the season.
Q: What if I have 9 points at the end of the season and I only have a 17 yr-old swimmer?
A: You need 10 points by the end of the season.
Q: Who can accrue points for my family?
A: Parents, Grandparents, any hard working ethical siblings over the age of 17.
Q: Can teenage swimmers do volunteer jobs?
A: They can't do any job while participating in a meet. However there are other jobs they can take outside meets e.g. meet setup on Fridays or meet breakdown and cleanup on Saturdays.
Q: Will the Volunteer Coordinator send out reminders letting all 200 parents know how many points they have?
A: No... but, if you are logged into the website, under My Account, there is a volunteer section that will show you your points!
Q: Can I earn multiple points by doing multiple jobs at one meet?
A: Yes, just be sure when you sign up that you can fulfill the responsibilities of both jobs. You can't be a timer and be on parking duty on the same shift. Unless.... for example, husband does parking and wife does timer. Or you choose jobs on different shifts.
Q: How do I "get" my points after I sign up online?
A: Check in with the Volunteer Coordinator at the meet, then you just go do your job! Your points will be reflected soon, on the website.
